Beginning in the 1930’s as a trading company, Samsung diversified rapidly into many different areas, such as textiles, securities, insurance, retail and food processing. Today, they are perhaps most well known for their electronics (an industry which they began to trade and produce in during the 1960’s), such as mobile phones and televisions.

Samsung’s range of televisions are known for their innovative technology and outstanding quality. With the advancement of 4K (the next step up in picture quality from HD- with almost four times as many pixels), Samsung has upped the ante by introducing another innovative technology to improvie picture quality even further; this technology is known as ‘Quantum Dots’.

Quantum dots –pioneered in part by Samsung- may be the next piece of technology to change the world of LCD screen quality; and this can apply to phones, televisions, tablets, laptops, and anything that uses an LCD display.

So what is a ‘Quantum dot’?  Essentially, a quantum dot is a particle which ranges between 2 to 10 nanometers in diameter (equivalent to about 50 atoms); it is in their extremely small size that the beauty and innovation of quantum dots is found. The colouration of a quantum dot is related to the difference in its size, the smallest dots appear blue, where the biggest ones appear red (the complimentary colour of blue). When these are applied to LCD screen, they make the need for white LED backlights and colour filters and other such unnecessary applications; this is not the only benefit however, the Quantum dot directly converts light from blue LEDs into highly saturated narrow band primary colours for LCDs.

The use of Samsung’s Quantum Dot works very well in combination with the use of 4K. For those who are unfamiliar with 4K, it is the next step up from HD, offering four times as many pixels (which is almost as high as cinema quality).

As more 4K content is becoming available, companies such as Samsung have been investing heavily in it, helping to improve the quality and reduce the cost of producing the technology. With the growing acceptance of 4K, HDR is the next big feature of Samsung TV’s, and many companies have made claims of their ‘High Dynamic Range’ capabilities; this provides a great advantage to Quantum Dot Technology.

When purchasing a Samsung 4K TV,  many customers have been deterred by something known as ‘retina display’. Retina display is a term coined some years ago by Apple, stating that when a pixel rate is too high, it is indiscernible to the human eye; whilst there is some truth to this, the effect can be minimised by purchasing a larger television, and by reducing the distance from which the television is viewed. One of the most noticeable things about 4K TV’s as opposed to HD, is that the grid of pixels cannot be seen even at close range, still, it is a good idea to buy a larger Samsung TV as opposed to a smaller one. If your budget only allows you to purchase a smaller TV, the effect of retina display can be minimised by bringing the TV closer to your viewing location.
